The Chapel School Awards Two Fifth Graders with Scholarships

On June 3rd, Sasha Thorne, a fifth grade student at The Chapel School was awarded the Carol and Christopher P. Kinghan Hearts of Giving Scholarship Award.  Claire Story, another student at The Chapel School, was awarded the Librarian Sharon Peterson Literacy Scholarship. The honors were presented during the Baccalaureate Service at the Village Lutheran Church.

Christopher Kinghan  baptized and confirmed at Village Lutheran Church and also attended The Chapel School. Christopher died unexpectedly in 2013 surrounded by his loving family. In 2014, after a long battle with cancer, Carol too passed away.  To remember both Carol and Chris and their joyful hearts, the scholarship was named "The Carol and Christopher Kinghan GIVING HEARTS Memorial Scholarship". The scholarship was set up to remember both Christopher and Carol's legacy and to encourage a deserving Chapel School student entering sixth grade who exemplifies both Christopehr and Carol's love of giving and helping others.

“Sasha Thorne truly has a heart of giving and exemplifies the spirit of kindness seen throughout our Chapel School student body," says Michael Schultz, principal of The Chapel School. "She is a worthy recipient of this wonderful award and I was pleased to present it to her on behalf of the Kinghan family.”

Claire Story was awarded the Librarian Sharon Peterson Literacy scholarship, an award to honor the legacy of a beloved librarian of the Chapel School, given to a deserving student who excels in reading and literacy.

The Literacy Scholarship is being funded through The Blue Ribbon Foundation.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation funds the goals of tuition assistance, technology, advance science and mathematics initiatives, and the arts and language offerings at The Chapel School. Visit the Blue Ribbon Foundation website for more information, or call board member principal Michael Schultz at 914-337-3202 (1002).
