Harlem School of the Arts Summer Programs are Open for Registration

The programs cover a variety of disciplines in the arts.

With summer fast approaching, parents of children interested in the arts including dance, music, theater, musical theater, and the visual arts, might want to check out what the Harlem School of the Arts at the Herb Alpert Center has to offer.

HSA is known locally, nationally, and internationally for providing classes in all four art forms, for kids as young as 3 and older, including new programs developed for kids newborn to 5 years of age.

This summer parents have an array of programs from which they and their children can choose.

The ARTScape Summer Day Camp is for children 4-12. This program provides classes in all four different art forms (music, dance, theater, and art and design) weekly— all taught by expert staff who are career professionals. Weekly trips to NYC's cultural destinations is included, and afternoon swimming rounds out the day.

There are three two-week sessions available from which to choose: July 8-July 19, July 22-Aug. 2, and Aug. 5-Aug. 16.

Parents are invited to join the last two information sessions on June 1 or June 8 at 5pm, held at the Harlem School of the Arts facility located at 645 Saint Nicholas Ave. in Manhattan.

HSA is located in the historic Harlem community and was founded by the late Dorothy Maynor, a concert soprano who was the first African-American woman to sit on the board of the Metropolitan Opera. She was also the first African-American invited to sing at two presidential inaugurations. In the mid-1960s she opened the Harlem School of the Arts in the basement of St. James Presbyterian Church in Harlem with 20 students. Today the organization services nearly 3,000 students per year and occupies a 37,000-square-foot facility which will begin a significant 9.5 million dollar renovation project underwritten by the Herb Alpert Foundation, at the end of the summer camp session.
