Long Island Nets Host Open Tryouts for Kids Dance Team


The Long Island Nets will hold open auditions for the Long Island Nets Kids Dance Team at Yes We Can Community Center on Saturday, August 11. The Long Island Nets Kids Dance Team is a professional squad launched last year during the Nets’ inaugural season on Long Island and they perform during select home games at NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. In addition to performing at Long Island Nets games, the team members will serve as Nets ambassadors and will represent the organization at events and media appearances throughout the community.

Auditions for the Kids Dance Team will be held at 11 a.m., with doors opening at 10 a.m. All dancers must arrive by 10:30 a.m. to register for the audition, as pre-registration is not available.

For dancers looking to gain an edge in the audition process, audition workshops for the Kids Dance Team will be held on Wednesday, August 1 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Yes We Can Community Center. The workshops are open to dancers ages 6-13, and participants will learn Long Island Nets Kids routines, similar to what will be performed on court during the season. Each session is $50 and dancers can register on the Long Island Nets website.

Christy R. Tolbert is the head coach of the Kids Dance Team. Tolbert is a native of Long Island, graduated from Long Island High School for Performing Arts (BOCES), and trained at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Broadway Dance Center. She has spent the last 19 years teaching youth dance on Long Island at Venettes Cultural Workshop, Milton Olive Middle School, and the Bayshore School District, among others.



Kids Dance Team Audition Requirements:

  • Doors open at 10am, auditions begin at 11am
  • Seeking boys and girls ages 6-13 with at least two years of dance training
  • Dancers will be asked to demonstrate their ability to learn and perform choreography
  • Tumbling and break-dancing skills are a plus, but not required
  • Participants should wear dance attire and non-marking sneakers or dance shoes
  • A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration to sign a participation waiver
  • Only those auditioning will be allowed into the gymnasium
  • Finalists may be kept until later in the evening depending on the number of participants
  • Dancers who are selected must be available to attend rehearsals on Long Island once a week as well as select home games at NYCB Live
