Westchester Youth Choirs Begins Programs for Young Singers

Westchester Youth Choirs recently launched two programs for youth singers in Westchester: a boys choir and a girls choir. The choral programs for young singers will prepare a range of songs, including classical and pop, to perform at concerts.

The singers of Westchester's Girl and Young Women's Chorus range from middle to high school students all from Westchester County.

In early September, Westchester Youth Choirs, a community chorus group which aims to promote musical excellence and positive character development through choral music, began two new choir programs. Due to the lack of choral groups in the area, Westchester Youth Choirs began the Westchester Boys Choir and the Westchester Girl and Young Women’s Chorus.

This fall, both groups are preparing a range of classical and pop songs following this semester’s theme, Singing Out Thanks. The Westchester Boys Choir is for boys ages 8-18 and rehearses every Tuesday from 5:30-7pm. The Westchester Girl and Young Women’s Chorus is for girls from middle to high school and meets on Mondays from 5:15-6:45pm. Both groups are open to all children in Westchester County.

The group aims to begin an entry-level group, Primary Chorus in January. This choir is for children who have had little experience with singing or are aiming to join one of the other choirs when they get older.

“Our mission is to offer musical opportunities for young people to improve their musicianship,” says Elisabeth Southorn, the group’s cofounder and artistic director, “but also to help them become really wonderful people by building various character skills, like self-confidence and teamwork.”

Auditions are held at the first rehearsal of each semester. Auditions for the fall semester have closed, but students are still welcome to come and observe.

Westchester Youth Choirs rehearses at Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco.
