The Magical Christmas Lights of Dyker Heights

The Magical Christmas Lights of Dyker Heights

The residents of the Dyker Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn take decorating their houses for the holidays as seriously as actors do when dressing for the Oscars--and the crowds show up in droves! The friendly and inviting neighborhood has been a staple in Christmas season celebrations for years.

From roof to ground, nearly every house in the neighborhood is decked out in professionally installed lighting masterpieces each winter. It is quite a sight to see families and residents come together to participate in this extreme hobby, bringing fun and joy to the community with them.

Tips for Visiting the Dyker Heights Holiday Lights

Dyker Heights Christmas lights are in southwest Brooklyn; they can be seen throughout the neighborhood but the best spots are 11th to 13th Avenues between 83rd and 86th Streets.

If driving, be prepared for lots of traffic. By public transportation you can take the D train to 79th Street, though you should prepare for a long walk.

If you’re willing to shell out some money for the best possible experience, check out one of the several guided tours offered, including ones from A Slice of Brooklyn Bus Tour, Dyker Heights walking or bus tour, and many others available online.

In past years, police officers have blocked off a few blocks in Dyker Heights to ensure safety for all spectators who are on foot. Note that if parking or taking the train, you may be in for a long walk on a cold night. Be sure to bring a stroller and blankets for any little ones who may get tired.

Since Dyker Heights is a residential neighborhood, there are no public bathrooms along the tour. Check out some local restaurants in the area for a bathroom break, a cup of cocoa, or just to warm up from the cold.
