10 Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Prospect Heights

For me, living in NYC is all about the food. After having kids, I was a bit worried that my dining out days were behind me. Thankfully in Brooklyn, having little ones doesn’t mean that dinner has to be a choice between cooking and take-out. As a result of my neighborhood’s large (and growing!) family population, more and more restaurants are gladly accommodating guests with kids. According to my family, these are the top ten best places for kids to eat in our ‘hood.

Tom’s Restaurant

Local residents famously formed a protective ring around this neighborhood gem in 1968 after conflict broke out following the assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These days, you’ll see a long line snaking out the front door made up of local hipsters and sleepy parents with excited kids in tow. If you get there before 9am, you probably won’t need to wait long for a coveted booth. (There’s also another kid-friendly location on the boardwalk in Coney Island.)

This casual restaurant was a welcome addition to a street with lots of bars and a few more formal restaurants. The food is deliciously homemade with fresh, local ingredients (the fried chicken sandwich is my favorite), and there’s a tasty kids menu as well. There’s also a cute play area in the back with toys and a play kitchen to occupy the little ones, and a sweet garden with picnic tables for warmer days.

This cheerful, homey restaurant complete with checkered tablecloths and tasty Italian comfort food, has a friendly, warm ambiance and good meal options for kids including spaghetti al pomodoro, baked ziti, and cheese calzones.

The bustling atmosphere and friendly staff make this an easy destination with kids. Plus, it consistently has the freshest fish around. Try to arrive when the restaurant opens, as it starts to get busy soon after that.

Probably best known for its San Francisco-style burritos, this is a great place for tasty, reasonably priced and reliable Mexican food. Although this is a smaller space (it’s a popular place to order take-out), there is some casual seating inside.
