Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with Frida Kahlo at NYBG

On October 23, attend Frida for Families at the New York Botanical Garden and celebrate Dia de los Muertos with the works of Frida Kahlo.

The New York Botanical Garden is paying homage to Frida Kahlo and welcomes visitors of all ages to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. Enjoy the Frida experience with a night of spooky adventure and festive activities. Families and friends gather on this traditional Mexican holiday to honor and remember family members who have died, and support their spiritual journey.

To celebrate: take a family photo with New York artist Lucrecia Novoa’s larger-than-life skeletons; dance along to Mexican music by Rana Santacruz; trick-or-treat down the Whole Foods Market Trail; listen to traditional Dia de los Muertos ghost stories; grind and taste your own cacao; decorate your own Dia de los Muertos skull in the Dodge Activity Center; and walk along the giant pumpkin displays along the Mitsubishi Wild Wetland Trail.

Other activities include decorating treat bags with Mexican- and Frida-inspired stamps, owl pellet dissections in the Discovery Center, performances at Frida’s Puppet Theater, and a celebration of the seasonal monarch butterfly migration to Mexico. Snacks and refreshments will be available to purchase at the Visitor Center Cantina.

The traditional Mexican holiday coincides with the closing weeks of Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life exhibit, so purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. Frida for Families events take place in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden on Friday, Oct. 23, from 6:30-9:30pm, with timed entries at 6:30 and 7:15pm. Admission is $20 for non-members of all ages, and $15 for members.
