Girl’s & Boy’s Basketball and Beyond Offers Basketball Programs in Woodside

The basketball program focuses on fundamental skills, nutrition, the history of the sport, and women's history.

Girl’s & Boy’s Basketball and Beyond, a basketball program in Woodside, began offering its affordable, year-round after-school and weekend classes for girls and boys, ages 5-16, in late December 2017. This summer, the basketball program will offer three two-week affordable summer camp sessions. The program aims to provide a safe, friendly, and educational environment for children to become well-rounded athletes.

Girl’s & Boy’s Basketball and Beyond takes a holistic approach to teaching the sport with lessons on and off the court, says founder Denise Frazier, who has been teaching and coaching for more than 30 years. In addition to learning and building basketball skills, children in the year-round and summer camp sessions will learn basic nutrition information, the history of the sport, and women’s history—information they will be able to incorporate into their everyday lives.

“One of the things that set us apart from other similar businesses is how it is an all-in-one program that offers two additional components: nutrition and sports education classroom lectures,” Frazier says. “We spend time asking our students after their classes, ‘what did you learn today?’”

The year-round programs offered by Girl’s & Boy’s Basketball and Beyond include eight-week sessions, unlimited monthly sessions, and 1-on-1 private lessons. The eight-week sessions, which are divided by age and skill level, are held two days a week, 1 hour a day, for each group. The unlimited monthly sessions, which require a three-month commitment, are less than $100, and children can come to as many sessions as they want.

“As a parent myself, I wanted to make something that is affordable for other parents as well,” Frazier says.

In the summer camp sessions, campers will be grouped according to their age and skill level on the court. Each session follows a basketball and nutrition theme, including Basketball Do’s and Don’ts and the Food Pyramid; Basketball Heroes and Smart Food Choices; and Basketball Past and Future and Energy Foods. Campers will receive a T-shirt, basketball composition notebooks to write down their notes from class lectures, and basketball key chains. Campers will even attend a WNBA game. Plus, the top three campers will also receive a brand-new pair of basketball sneakers. Once each session is over, campers will receive a medal of completion.

The summer camp sessions will run July 9-20, July 23-Aug. 3, and Aug. 13-24. Registration for camp is now open.
