Orange County, New York, an area of the Empire State a mere 60 miles north of New York City, is known for historic sites, farm-to-table restaurants, and gorgeous landscapes. But some of the most majestic sites and attractions are off the beaten path.

If you know where to look, you’ll find hiking trails that open up to sweeping views, charming B&Bs, working farms, and even some spine-chilling paranormal activity. These are truly spots only the locals know about.

Here are eight places tucked away in Orange County that are worth leaving the city for.

Pacem in Terris

96 Covered Bridge Road, Warwick

This garden along the Wawayanda River features sculptures by internationally known artist Frederick Franck.

Seligmann Center for the Arts

23 White Oak Drive, Sugar Loaf

View an intimate collection of modern sculptures at the estate of the famous surrealist painter and sculptor Kurt Seligmann. The center also offers rotating exhibitions, workshops, and other performances.

Gomez Mill House

11 Mill House Road, Marlboro

This 1714 Mill House is the oldest manor house in Orange County and the earliest extant Jewish residence in America. It features an ice house, a restored mill, and a dam.

Fair Oaks Drive-In

365 Bloomingburg Road, Middletown

Visiting this old-school drive-in movie theatre is like taking a step back in time. The seasonal operation features twin screens that play current movie selections. Made-to-order food is also available during all screenings.

Village of Pine Bush

Known as the UFO Capital of the East Coast since the '60s, alien hunters report strange lights in the woods and glowing circular objects that hover above the town.

Pine Bush House B&B
