Innovate Manhattan Charter School, a flagship middle school that is part of the global Swedish network Kunskapsskolan, began two new programs in September: Innovate Manhattan Charter School After School Program and Steam Saturdays.

In early September, the school, in collaboration with Educational Alliance, began the Innovate Manhattan Charter School After School Program. Based on The Boys & Girls Clubs’ program, it provides students with homework help, tutoring services, and youth issue classes, such as gang prevention and leadership development, from 3-6pm.

On Sept. 20, the charter school launched its Saturday program called STEAM Saturdays (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) in conjunction with Pace University. The focus is to expose young people, who have an interest in these fields, to diverse studies that include robotics, engineering, and microbiology. Classes are from 9:15-11:30am. As a goal-oriented school, each Innovate student is assigned a coach, who monitors and guides the student’s progress throughout the year, offering support during weekly coaching sessions. Coaches assist students in articulating and setting goals, managing time, and organizing themselves to help meet their goals.

“Innovate is a school where kids learn about learning and take ownership of it in ways that will serve them [for] a lifetime,” says David Penberg, Innovate Manhattan’s head of school. “The premise is simple, surround students with passionate and committed educators and create the best possible conditions for learning.”
