Long Island University Post Summer Youth Camps is taking advantage of the university’s resources to add several programs to its day camps, including academic enrichment programs, horseback riding, and cheerleading.

The academic enrichment program is a two-week pilot program from June 30-July 11 that provides campers in kindergarten through third grade with one-on-one tutors from the LIU education program for reading, writing, and math. The program, added in response to a wave of parent requests, is hoping to expand to include a literacy program in the fall, allowing 8-15 students in third through sixth grades to work in a one-on-one setting for 3 hours every Saturday. “We’re a college campus,” says camp director Nickolette Kacharaba, “So even though we do traditional summer camps, everything is education-based.”

Campers ages 8 and older can take advantage of the new horseback riding program, available for two-week sessions from July 7-Aug. 15, as the LIU Post Camps also team up with the horse ranch located on campus. In addition, there will be a one-week cheerleading program offered July 14-18, running just as the university hosts a large cheerleading competition.

All of these new programs will run as half-day enrichment to traditional day camp activities. “It’s not just a day, it’s a lasting memory,” Kacharaba says. “We want them to have fun, but also grow—to leave with a new craft, skill, or hunger to learn something.”

Registration is now open for programs for pre-K to high school students.
