Mathnasium Learning Center Offers Preschool Program

Mathnasium, a math-only learning center, recently launched its new program First Steps, which is aimed to teach preschoolers the basics of math and make them comfortable with math before they start school. The math-only learning center in Queens aims to make math make sense to all children.

Math-only learning center Mathnasium, which aims to make math make sense, will soon offer the First Steps program at its Forest Hills location. Intended for children ages 4- to 6-years-old, the program will help preschoolers learn and master the fundamentals of math through interactive, fun-filled classes.

“If you make [math] fun, they will enjoy it,” says Mathnasium instructor Elizabeth Lou.

Mathnasium aims to help children learn to love math instead of fear it. The class, which will be held once a week on the weekend, will use songs, art projects, manipulatives, and more to make math more accessible. This approach, Lou says, will show children how they use math every day, making it less intimidating.

“If they’re comfortable [with math] when they’re young, they’re going to be more confidant when they get to school,” Lou says.

With the world becoming more competitive, Lou says it’s important for children to become proficient in math fundamentals well before school starts. As with a language, Lou says children can start becoming familiar with the vocabulary of math at a fairly young age. “Preschool is not just playing in the playground anymore,” she says.
