Leadership Development Offered for Children at Modern Warrior

Modern Warrior, which offers self-defense classes for all ages, is now offering Leadership Development classes for tweens and teens during which they will learn anti-bullying techniques.

Modern Warrior is a self-defense school that teaches practical self-defense programs, based in the martial arts, for adults, seniors, teens, tweens, and children.

Its children’s martial arts program, Wolverinz, is designed to build discipline and responsibility in a safe learning environment through self-defense skills and fun fitness activities. Modern Warrior also offers one-day weekend workshops for kids such as anti-abduction and parking lot safety. These family-oriented courses require parents to accompany their kids to class, as the goal is for families to learn how to address challenges and safety issues together as a team and to have a plan in the face of danger.  These are 2-hour classes, and cost $5 per person.

For the first time this season, Modern Warrior is offering a Leadership Development class for 8- to 15-year-olds, in which students will participate in anti-bullying and teambuilding exercises and discussions. Emphasis is put on personal responsibility when making tactical decisions, and dealing with the positive and negative consequences of their choices. The goal is for children to learn to be active leaders as opposed to passive bystanders and to find thoughtful solutions to issues and assess the outcomes.

“We want to teach kids to look at the big picture, as opposed to making very quick-second decision just because it might be easier for them,” says Holly Acker, the general manager of Modern Warrior. The course will run from 3-6pm, on Saturday, Dec. 12, and costs $25 per person.  Parent supervision is not required for this class.
