MoMath is Offering Free Online Programming this Summer

The National Museum of Mathematics is providing math-lovers of all ages engaging math programming online for kids and adults during the coronavirus pandemic.

The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is now offering free virtual summer programs to keep NYC students and families engaged amid school closures and social distancing. MoMath, the only math museum in North America, is working to provide students with interactive educational opportunities that can be experienced remotely.

“While we can’t wait to welcome visitors back to MoMath in New York, we’re thrilled to provide continued free online programming for students and families during the summer,” said Cindy Lawrence, CEO and executive director of MoMath. “It’s important to continue building students’ engagement with math, especially with schools closed.”

MoMath’s educational programs are designed by expert mathematicians and math educators, providing students with both an interactive and engaging experience. These programs appeal to all ages, and use math games and puzzles to connect with broader concepts such as sports, music, visual art, card games, astronomy, and engineering. Students will have the opportunity to develop problem solving, logical reasoning, strategizing, and creative thinking skills through these entertaining programs.

We can’t wait to get back to MoMath to ride the square-wheeled trikes and try to solve puzzles in the Enigma Café. Until then, MoMath’s free math programs include:

Math Encounters
When: Selected day of every month, 4pm and 7pm
Free public presentation series featuring topics ranging from mind-bending paradoxes, to astrophysics, to the correlation between dance and mathematics. Though this is typically geared toward adults, children 16 and younger can participate when accompanied by an adult.

Family Fridays
When: Selected Friday of every month, 6:30pm
Targeted toward both children and adults, Family Fridays’ activities encourage family fun for all ages. Previous sessions include patterns, origami, math and magic, and Rubik’s Cube mosaic.

Ask A Mathematician
When: First Thursday of every month, 4-5pm
Back by popular demand, participants will have the opportunity to ask Alex Kontorovich, MoMath's Dean of Academic Content and Rutgers Math Professor, any and all questions they may have for a mathematician. While this session is free, there is limited capacity so you can register here beforehand.

Math Gym: A Workout for Your Brain
When: Held on select days from 3:30-4:30pm, however, students can continue working on the math problems they've selected from the program on their own time
Math-lovers have the opportunity to exercise their brains as they choose using a variety of math problems hand-selected by MoMath’s advisory council of math Ph.D.s. Students will have the opportunity to work independently on math problems with guidance of an expert mathematician. This program is intended for students fourth grade or older with strong reading skills and the ability to work independently for long periods of time. Students younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
