New Attractions Are Coming to Coney Island’s Luna Park

The city has announced plans to expand the storied Coney Island amusement park.

New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and NYC Parks just announced plans to add a large-scale water ride, adventure park, a public plaza with open-air food options, and an arcade to Coney Island’s world-famous amusement park.

The plans call for a log flume, zip lines, and a ropes course on the vacant land between Surf Avenue and the boardwalk. The pedestrian plaza will be constructed on two nearby streets. The adventure park is slated to open next summer, but the log flume won’t be complete until the 2020 season.

The property will be developed by Central Amusement International (CAI), the current operator of Luna Park, under a 10-year lease agreement with the city. The work will increase the footprint of Luna Park by approximately 50 percent, from 300,000 square feet to 450,000 square feet.

“The Coney Island Amusement District is a nostalgic New York City destination, and we are proud to be a part of improving and evolving it for future generations to enjoy,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. “We are confident that the new developments to Luna Park will add even more fun for the thousands of families that flock to Coney Island each year.”

City officials say the project will also benefit the neighborhood surrounding the park. "Coney Island is both a cherished summertime destination and an important economic engine for South Brooklyn,” said James Patchett, President and CEO of New York City Economic Development Corporation. “With these exciting new attractions and our ongoing investments in housing and infrastructure, Coney Island’s future has never looked brighter.”
