Earth Shaking New Exhibit at the Long Island Children's Museum

Discover the science of earthquakes and tsunamis at the Long Island Children's Museum's new exhibit, When the Earth Shakes.

The Long Island Children’s Museum kicked off its new traveling exhibit last weekend, and it’s all about the science of Earth. In When the Earth Shakes, children and families can explore everything about earthquakes, tsunamis, and the science and engineering of geology. Did you know that earthquakes happen every day on Earth? Or that they are caused by moving tectonic plates which make up the planet’s surface like puzzle pieces? And that most earthquakes occur along these tectonic boundaries, many of which are under the oceans?

With dynamic activities developed by the Sciencenter of Ithaca, with funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Earthquake Engineering Simulation Network at Cornell University, visitors to the museum can rock the Quake Karaoke seismogram platform; design and build a structure to withstand a 16-foot wave in the Tsunami Tank, or to stand up against an earthquake on the Shake Table; fit the tectonic plates together of Puzzled Earth; go back in geological time in Plates in Motion.

In addition to learning about the structure and inner workings of the planet, children find out how humans work to make the world function.  “The exhibit allows children to better understand the natural occurrences that happen every day all around the world, and how scientists and engineers address these to make us all safer,” says Aimee Terzulli, the LICM Director of Education and Visitor Experiences.

When the Earth Shakes will be in residence at the LICM through April 24. The Long Island Children’s Museum is located at 11 Davis Ave., in Garden City. For more information visit licm.org, or call 516-224-5800.
