Queens College Summer Camp Adds Programs for Young Campers

Queens College Summer Camp, a day camp in Queens, is extending its theater and athletic programs to include programs for kindergarten-age campers.

This summer, Queens College Summer Camp is offering new programming for kindergarten-age campers, including a dynamic theater program and an all-day sports program for aspiring athletes.

Campers ages 5-8 can join the Little Theater production program, offered in two, four-week sessions. Campers will work on producing a mini-musical through dialogue rehearsal, games, singing, and dance followed by an afternoon of daily sports activities and instructional swim time. Past musicals include The Little Mermaid and Hairspray, says marketing coordinator Donna Pace. At the end of each four-week session, parents are invited to watch the final production.

The all-day sports program for ages 5-6 is designed to promote “endurance, flexibility, balance, and coordination,” Pace says. The program features popular sports options such as basketball, softball, dance, volleyball, swimming, and introductory tennis classes.

Camp sessions feature many innovative programs geared toward older campers. Aspiring pastry chefs ages 9-14 can learn how to decorate cakes, cupcakes, and cookies in Designer Desserts—a class so popular the camp is now offering additional classes for ages 9-10. The camp is also expanding its Robotics Engineering class for ages 9-14, designed to teach budding inventors how to use the NXT robotic design system to build and mastermind their own robots.

Registration is rolling for children ages 5-16, who can engage in a summer of sports, education, and theater programming as well as a unique counselor-in-training program from June 29-Aug. 21. Programs are offered from 9am-4pm, Monday-Friday on a two-, four-, six-, or eight-week basis.

All camp activities take place within the college’s sprawling 80-acre campus. Grab-and-go breakfast, snacks, and lunch will be provided daily. Open houses will be held on June 6, 7, and 20 at 10am and 10:45am at the college’s Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
