The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation with the Help of the NYPD Launches Backpack Project

The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation with the Help of the NYPD Launches Backpack Project

The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation will be launching its Backpack Project on September 15 at P.S. 59 William Floyd School in Brooklyn, and on September 23 at P.S. 151 Lyndon B. Johnson School in Brooklyn, according to a press release.

Detective Ramos was killed in the line of duty, along with his partner Detective Wen Jun Liu, on December 20, 2014. The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation, in partnership with The Legacy Center New York and the New York Police Departments 79th district, will deliver backpacks filled with much needed school supplies to PreK-3rd grade children currently living below the poverty line with the help of 20 local police officers –some who worked with Detective Rafael Ramos at his precinct.

The two schools in Brooklyn were chosen because they are areas where Detective Ramos lived and worked. His wife, Maritza Ramos, who is also president of the Foundation, and their son Jayden will be on hand at both ceremonies.

The NYPD also donated a climbing wall that will be set up in each school for the children to enjoy. There will be egg races, an obstacle course, Double Dutch and a dance competition (with music supplied by a DJ). Mounted police will also be present with treats for the children to feed the horses. The Youth Drill Team Marching Band will put on a tribute military performance that salutes Detective Ramos and his partner Detective Liu. Detective Ramos’s son, Jayden Ramos is part of the team and will march in memory of his father.

Education is something that Detective Ramos was passionate about, as was evident in him being in the top 10 percent of his police academy class. These two events are arranged with the sole aim of improving community and police relations in the areas where Detective Ramos was born, worked and lived with his family.
