Learning Center in Port Washington Expands Curriculum

Lisa and Wayne Ng, husband-and-wife co-owners of the new Sylvan Learning Center in Port Washington, which opened on Jan. 2, are expanding the traditional Sylvan tutoring programs to include a new enrichment program. “In the past when people look at Sylvan, they look at it as a place where people go when they are struggling,” Mr. Ng says, “we’re trying to change that mindset, and show families that we’re not only a place where children come when they’re struggling, they’re coming here for enrichment as well.”

Sylvan recently launched its new EDGE program, which includes robotics, coding, engineering, study skills, and early reading and math. Sylvan Edge is primarily for students in grades 1-6.

Sylvan Edge Camp runs during spring and summer break. June 27-Aug. 26. To enroll, call or go on the website. There is no contract, so you can sign up for a single day, or the entire summer. There is no registration fee or deadline. A typical day starts at 9am with an engineering or science project, followed by snack time, robotics, lunch, and finally coding class. There are also guest speakers slated to discuss their profession on select camp days, such as local doctors and engineers. Pricing is $99 per day, $450 for 1 week, $800 for 2 weeks, $1,050 for 3 weeks, or $1,200 for 4 weeks.

Camp ends at 2:30pm, however extended days are offered until 5:30pm. During these hours, kids participate in fun activities including arts and crafts, music, cooking projects, video and board games, Brain-quest tournaments, and Friday afternoon movie time. Extended hours are offered for an additional fee of $25 per day.

Sylvan Learning Center is located at 23 Main St. in Port Washington. For more information call 516-303-9955, or visit sylvanlearning.com.
