The Cathedral School Launches Sports Program With Basketball

After joining the Confederation of New York Schools and Team Sports (CONSAT) league in the spring, The Cathedral School will kick off its first basketball season in mid-November. The team is open to students in grade 6-8. Both girls and boys are invited to tryout.

Eleisa Coster, marketing director at The Cathedral School, describes CONSAT as the brainchild of small New York City schools that were not previously able to provide athletic opportunities.

"It's all about participation and learning the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship," says Coster. "It's also a great opportunity for our students to meet other students."

After joining the league, The Cathedral School brought in a new Director of Athletics, Katherine Ames, to head three sports programs: soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and volleyball in the spring. Each team is co-ed and will require student tryouts. This, explains Coster, is to emphasize the importance of what it means to be on a team. Practices are held twice a week at The Cathedral School gym, and games will take place on Thursdays at Blue School in Downtown Manhattan.

Coster expects to see involvement increase come mid-November, especially as both students and their parents become more excited about athletics at The Cathedral School.

“The students are still expected to do their homework, though,” she says.

Established by the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in 1949, The Cathedral School in the Upper East Side is an independent academic institution for students in nursery through grade 8. The schools’ rigorous curriculum is embedded in an appreciation for Hellenic traditions and values: Greek language classes first begin in preschool, and Latin and Ancient Greek classes start at the middle school level. In joining the CONSAT league, The Cathedral School hopes to extend its educational offerings beyond the classroom.

The Cathedral School is located in 319 E 74th St, New York. For more information, call 212-249-2840 or visit CathedralSchoolNY.org.
