Vote For the New York Aquarium’s Next Mural

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium needs your help!

In honor of World Oceans Day on June 8, the aquarium opened a mural contest for local artists and art schools to submit designs to raise awareness on the harmful effects of plastic waste in our oceans, according to a WCS press release. Forty-two entries were received, and narrowed down to seven finalists—that’s where you come in.

Voting is now open to the public to choose their favorite three designs to become the new Education Hall mural along the Coney Island Boardwalk. The finalists are Sheena Wong Shue, Haruka Aoki, Danielle Mastrion, Nicholas Pappalardo, Thomas Manco, Jana Liptak, and Alisa Minyukova.

The seven final designs were chosen by a panel of judges, including Jon Forrest Dohlin, WCS vice president and director of the New York Aquarium; Pamela Harris, New York State assemblywoman; and Pam Pettyjohn, president of the Coney Island Beautification Project.

“We received incredible submissions from artists all around the New York area who want to help transform our Education Hall boardwalk facade and inspire people to protect our waters," Dohlin said in the press release. "Now we need New Yorkers to help to choose the winner.”

You can view and vote on the designs on the New York Aquarium’s website. The three winning designs will be installed and unveiled the week of World Oceans Day, according to the WCS press release.
