The First Presbyterian Church Nursery School was founded in 1952 in the heart of Greenwich Village. The school offers a non-sectarian program, welcoming children and families of all configurations, religions, races, cultures, and economic backgrounds. Respect for individuality and community building are centerpieces of the program. The Nursery School is dedicated to the development of the whole child in a warm and nurturing environment, with an educational philosophy based on the theory of Developmental Interaction, the program is enhanced and inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach.
FPCNS believes that children learn best when they are active participants in their learning. The school offers experienced classroom teachers, along with specialists in Studio Art, Music, Movement, Gardening and a Healthy Snack Program. FPCNS has excellent student teacher ratios in classrooms for children aged 2.0 to 5.3. The nursery school offers large airy classrooms, a roof top playground, and indoor play space for rainy day play. Extended Day programming and an Early Summer program are available for 4s and 5s students. Parent participation is welcome and encouraged. A lending library with over 3000 volumes is a beloved parent run resource. The school actively raises funds to provide financial assistance to families in need.
Project A.P.P.L.E. at at The First Presbyterian Church Nursery School combines two of our favorite things—our healthy snack and our gardening programs! Our goal is to initiate conversations and learning around healthy food choices that will continue throughout our children’s lives. Together we are eating healthier at school, experimenting with new tastes and recipes, growing some of our food and composting what is left over.
We welcome and encourage the participation and feedback of First Presbyterian Church Nursery School parents. Parents help us to enrich everyone’s experience at school, and to build a vibrant, inclusive and cooperative community.
The First Presbyterian Church Nursery School offers students in the Yellow and Blue Rooms an Extended Day Enrichment program on Mondays-Thursdays in the fall, winter, and spring. The EDE extends the student’s day until 4:00pm. The Nursery School offers 12 different enrichment class choices throughout the course of the school year featuring topics such as Chess, Chemistry, Literacy, Math and Yoga.
