Digital Field Camp Encourages Curiosity

Digital Field Camp will launch its first cycle in April and will then run four sessions this summer. It is designed to be an “action-packed adventure.”

Zach Vine, trip leader and camp director of Digital Field Camp, is a licensed NYS public school teacher with more than 10 years of formal experience. Vine founded Digital Field Camp because he wanted a camp that would allow children to learn without being stuck inside a classroom. “What kids need today is a guide to help them navigate their way through the massive web of information they have access to,” he says.

The camp, which will launch its first cycle in April and will then run four sessions this summer, is designed to be an “action-packed adventure” that encourages kids ages 6-12 to use technology in a way that will help them in their day-to-day lives.

Vine stresses that his camp is not one where kids are staring at a screen all day. Teams of students, accompanied by trained expert instructors (a 5:1 student-to-instructor-ratio), engage in field studies where they follow clues and use technology as a tool to navigate through digital and physical spaces.

Though the camp follows a game model, Vine says it is not an overly competitive environment. “The teams are competing to be successful on their own,” he says. “Everyone is going to be successful by the end of the week because they are going to learn how to satisfy their own curiosity.”

Digital Field Camp’s April session runs from April 9-13. Camp drop-off is from 8:30am-9am at 71 W. 23rd St. Early drop-off is available. For more information, call 718-578-2614.
