Guidelines for Contributing to NYMetroParents Media

NYMetroParents has opportunities for professional writers and aspiring writers alike, publishing personal essays by parents in the local community as well as advice from experts and features from seasoned writers in the parenting field—here's how to contribute to the NYMetroParents family of print publications and to the NYMetroParents.com website.

Davler Media Group publishes six award-winning monthly magazines: Big Apple Parent, Queens Parent, Brooklyn Parent, Westchester Parent, Rockland Parent, and Long Island Parent.

In print, we reach 1 million parents each month in the NYC area. Our articles are also posted on our website, www.NYMetroParents.com. We’re the largest publisher of local parenting media in the country.

What kinds of articles is NYMetroParents looking for?

We accept both pitches and full pieces on spec from writers who reside (or have a business) in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Westchester, Rockland, Fairfield County, CT, or Long Island. We do not publish: memoirs, fiction, or poetry. Before you submit, please familiarize yourself with our brand by spending some time on our website.

We're most looking for the following, with a specific NY-Metro-area bent if at all possible:

Family Activities

To correspond with our extensive family activities calendar, we regularly publish articles about fun things to do with kids in the NYC area. Family activity articles we're looking for include explorations of venues (like this one about the Bronx Zoo); roundups of apps, movies, documentaries, podcasts, books, etc.; ideas for celebrating holidays (like this one about Memorial Day); roundups/where-to guides of top family-friendly venues (like where to pick berries, zip lines, and family hikes); and articles about family travel destinations. If what you'd like to promote is a specific event, please submit it to our online calendar.

Local News

Whether you have good news about something happening in the community (like kids volunteering), a new business opening, new classes being offered, and more, you can submit information via our news submission form (where you can also see other ideas and guidelines for news articles). Remember: It should be news that relates to parenting.

Essays from Parents

A real-life parenting experience, written in first person, that is likely to resonate with other NY-metro-area parents. We cast a broad net here: It can be about one day/one point in time, a milestone in your life as a parent or your child's life, or a parenting lesson you've learned. The tone can be funny, heartwarming, tear-jerking, thought provoking, or even educational. For samples of essays we loved, click here.

Service Features

Articles that run about 800-1200 words on a range of topics, including family fun, family dynamics, child development, kid milestones like summer camp, birthday parties, or holiday celebrations, social concerns surrounding kids, school issues, and extracurricular/after-school activities. The goal of all our service features is to make our readers' lives easier. To that end, all our features must be focused on providing advice that will seem realistic and doable to a majority of local parents. We strongly prefer that all sources be based in the NY Metro area. Exceptions can be allowed in cases where the expertise or unique experience that the source offers is integral to the quality of the piece. Stories with a seasonal angle are welcomed. If you pitch an idea, please include two links to samples of your writing. If you choose to submit a prewritten piece on spec, make sure to include hed and dek suggestions, a sidebar, a pull quote, and contact info for anyone quoted.

***Due to large numbers of submissions, we can't respond to every one, but rest assured all are read. We will reply if we have possible interest in assigning or buying a piece. Please allow four weeks for a reply. If you haven't heard from us within that time, feel free to submit your idea/work to other outlets.

Please email submissions, with "EDITORIAL SUBMISSION" as the subject, to:
