DIY Trees

With spring plants popping up all over the borough, your kids will likely want to plant some foliage of their own. That’s where Alley Pond Environmental Center’s Free Tree Day comes into play. The center will give away 150 free trees—one per household—to NYC residents on a first come, first served basis on April 1. Pick up your tree, cart it home, and start your own green space. Easter Fun

With spring just beginning and the Easter Bunny gearing up to hide his eggs, families have plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the fresh air this month. While your Easter weekend may already be chockfull of family time and jellybeans, make sure to squeeze in one of these festive egg hunts:

 

April 7: The Queens County Farm Museum's Easter Egg Hunt includes egg tossing and rolling games, a bunny hop dance, and a photo opportunity with Whiskers the Bunny. Click for details

 

April 7: The Easter Egg Hunt at the USTA National Tennis Center gives kids a chance to work off their Cadbury Egg-induced sugar high with a mini tennis camp following the egg hunt. Prizes for finding the most eggs include one week of summer camp, free court time, and more. Click for details

 

April 7-8: During the Spring Eggstravaganza at the Queens Zoo, kids can scour the grounds for colorful eggs hidden by the crafty zoo keepers, take a photo with the Easter Bunny, and participate in spring-themed arts and crafts projects. But the big hit of the dayis sure to be a visit with some particularly fuzzy friends: Animal-loving children will delight in meeting the zoo’s Flemish giant rabbits, Ruby, Flip, and Olivia. 1001 Voices festival queensStarts April 12

Music to Your Ears



Queens Symphony Orchestra’s 2012 Arts and Music Festival, titled 1001 Voices, is sure to outshine any musical event in the orchestra’s past. The festivities include three preview concert and lecture events, a family-friendly opening event featuring a cello performance by Jung-Hsuan Ko, the 2011 QSO Young Soloist Competition winner, a second concert featuring works by composers Justine Chen and George Tsontakisand, and a grand finale that includes Franzetti's family opera Gauchito and the Pony. The final concert will also feature the world premiere of 1001 Voices: A Symphony for Queens, a performance that promises to wow even the youngest audience members.
