Hex & Co. Board Game Cafe Opens on the Upper West Side and Offers After-School Programs

Uptown's first board game cafe now offers after-school and camp programs.

Hex and Company, the board game cafe now open on the Upper West Side, is offering after-school programs and camps for children ages five and up. Families can come and enjoy a wide array of games, food, and delicious, locally roasted coffee.

The not-so-typical cafe will provide after-school programs and summer camp beginning on June 18. Hex and Company is the partnership and joining of The Brooklyn Strategist, pioneering neurodevelopment programs through game play, and The Uncommons, NYC's first board game cafe. Children will be able to play  avariety of analog board and card-games, role-playing games, and tabletop games.

"Games are designed to promote neurodevelopment through supervised and structured game play as well as promote healthy social interaction, to spark creativity and intellectual curiosity," says Jon Freeman, Ph.D., CBSM, owner.

In the first week of after-school programs, children will play a new game and learn about the instruction and strategies for game play. In the second week, participants will have a more in-depth experience by reviewing the games and novel problem-solving skills. Hex and Company also offers school pickups.

Summer camp will be an extension of the after-school programs, but with additions including creative game design, mechanics workshops, extended tabletop play, and tournament style play. The summer camps will run from June 18 through September 18, t, or the day before public school starts.

"There are very few similar businesses and our business is a pioneer model that others have tried to follow," says Dr. Freeman. "Ours is a unique model that promotes community by providing a physically and psychologically safe space for everyone that enters. We promote cross-generational interaction through healthy, spirited analog gameplay and our enrichment programs tap into areas that are very different from other after-school programs."
