International Academy of New York Opens on the Upper East Side

International Academy of New York, a school with a bilingual focus, opened on the Upper East Side in September.

International Academy of New York, a diverse and multi-cultural school community with a focus on bilingual language in Spanish or Mandarin Chinese, opened its doors to students in nursery school to second grade in September.

The academy values a curious and active mindset and aims to nurture growth in all forms, including physical, intellectual, social, and emotional. Emily Benson, director of admissions, describes International Academy of New York as a “miniature New York City in its diversity.” She adds, “The academy is very multicultural and students come from different socioeconomic statuses as well.”

Students spend 40 percent or more of their week in their target language via language class, in addition to art and music classes also taught in their target language by teachers who are native speakers. Children will also be spoken to in their target language through daily interactions as well. “Language teachers will communicate with their students in their target language even in passing in the hallways. Our program truly gives students the full gamut of language learning," Benson says.

Parents can expect an intimate student-to-teacher ratio at International Academy of New York as the school strives to give each child the individual attention they need. All head teachers work with a teacher’s assistant.

International Academy of New York is accepting applications for pre-nursery to third grade for the fall 2018 school year. It plans to add a grade each year through eighth grade.
