Museum of Ice Cream Coming to NYC

Museum of Ice Cream Coming to NYC

NYC families and tourists are in for a sweet treat when the Museum of Ice Cream opens in the Meatpacking District at the end of July, according to Eater NY.

The Museum of Ice Cream will be located at 100 Gansevoort St., right near Whitney Art Museum and the Gansevoort Street entrance to the High Line. It will feature art installations, history, ice cream samples and an ice cream-themed playground of interactive exhibits.

The goal is for the museum to be “a lick-able, likable, shareable ice cream-centric experience," co-founder Maryellis Bunn says. "We’re creating this for people to really draw and embrace this idea of delight and indulgence.”

Bunn, with co-founder Manish Vora, also set out to fulfill a childhood fantasy of swimming through a pool of sprinkles. "Through several iterations and constant searching throughout the world, I couldn’t find anything," says Bunn. "I decided to go ahead and build it myself."

While the sprinkles in the pool at the museum won’t be real, they’re made to look and feel exactly like the kind you eat on sundaes.  And of course, visitors will be able to sample plenty of ice cream. Food scientist Irwin Adam will be creating flavors for the museum, and each week, a different New York shop will create custom ice cream flavors and shakes for visitors of the museum, including Black Tap and Oddfellows.

Tickets cost $18 for one person, $30 for couples and $12 for kids and seniors (kids under three are free). Visitors are encouraged to reserve their time in advance. The average visit usually spans 20 minutes. The museum will be running from July 29 to August 3 (it’s closed on Tuesdays), though it may travel to other cities or find permanent space in the future.
