New Indoor Interactive Mini-Golf Opens in Red Hook

New Indoor Interactive Mini-Golf Opens in Red Hook

Owners Ryan Powers Chris Schneider dreamed up Shipwrecked Miniature Golf as theater students in college years ago, and it has finally come to fruition, opening its doors this past April.

“We created a story that you are a character in as you play,” explains Powers, and as the game progresses, details of the story develop which culminates in a moral at the end of the game. In this game of theatrical mini-golf, there are six different interactive theatrical moments over the standard 18-hole golf course. Through the course of the game, players encounter animatronics, sound effects, projectors, bubble effects, water effects, and even holograms.

Mostly everything is built from recycled and salvaged materials. The holes themselves were saved from the dumpster, when Powers and Schneider dug the whole course out of the ground and drove it—over six trips!—from Maryland to New York. A lot of the course is recycled from old movie sets as well, which otherwise would have landed in a landfill. Even the front counter is fashioned out of old shipping containers. “We really pride ourselves on that,” Powers says, “I love the amount of stuff we saved from being thrown away.”

There are also custom-built arcade games, and visitors can also choose from a selection of classic games from the 80s, such as Pac Man, Donkey Kong, and Frogger. And it’s just a quarter to play, “just like in the old days,” Powers says.

The venue has three separate event spaces, and can host parties of 50 people or more. Snacks and drinks are available to purchase. Larger groups and parties interested in eating may order from a variety of catering options through the business. No outside food is allowed.

Shipwrecked is located at 621 Court St., in Red Hook. For more information call 718-852-4653, or visit shipwreckednyc.com.
