Charter School for Excellence to Open in Stamford

Charter School for Excellence to Open in Stamford

Stamford Charter School for Excellence, which is based on the proven model of the Bronx Charter School for Excellence, is set to open in the fall. The charter school in Stamford is accepting applications for pre-K through first grade.

Set to open in the fall of 2015, Stamford Charter School for Excellence is a free public charter school that will serve students in pre-K through first grade in its first year. Modeled after the Bronx Charter School for Excellence, Stamford Charter School will have the same focus of preparing students of all ages for college, says Quentin Phipps, marketing director and advertising coordinator. While the Stamford school is a sister school to the Bronx Charter School, it is an independent institution and will have its own culture.

The Bronx Charter School won the Blue Ribbon award in 2012, one of the highest achievements a school can earn. Stamford Charter will operate under the same model of learning integration and have a shared curriculum including intellectual, artistic, social, emotional, and ethical development. Students will begin preparing for and thinking about applying to colleges in pre-K, with more rigorous expectations added as they progress through the school.

“We believe all students can achieve and make it to college,” Phipps says.

Applications for the 2015-2016 school year for pre-K through first grade are due May 19, and a public lottery process for enrollment into Stamford Charter will take place that evening. Students whose names aren't drawn in the lottery can be put on the waiting list in case a spot opens, and the school will accept students mid-year on a case-by-case basis if there are open seats.

The school will also begin accepting applications for the 2016-2017 pre-K class on May 20.

Applications can be found on the charter school’s website in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. Parents can also apply over the phone by calling 203-548-0194.
