White Plains Library Offers Teen Volunteer Opportunities

White Plains Library Offers Teen Volunteer Opportunities

Apply to be a volunteer by this Friday, June 1.

Is your teen looking for something to do this summer? Get the kids out of the house while positively contributing to the community (and their resumes!) The White Plains Public Library is looking for teen volunteers for three popular programs:

Reading Buddies

Teen volunteers are paired with children who are learning to read, offering support and encouragement. Teens volunteer for a two-hour time slot and read for fifteen minutes with each child. The program runs three days a week (Tuesdays 4:30-7:00 p.m., Wednesdays 2:30-5:00 p.m., and Thursdays 2:30-5:00 p.m.) for five weeks, from July 10th through August 9th.

The Do Gooders Club

Participants work on a variety of projects designed to "do good" in the community. These projects may include sewing baby blankets for local hospitals, making cat toys for the SPCA, and designing cards for veterans through the American Red Cross. The group meets on Tuesdays from 3-5 pm, from July 3rd through August 14th.

Build a Better Book Mini Camp

Teens work to design tactile picture books for children with visual impairments. They will learn about design thinking and discuss issues of accessibility, plus harness their creativity and a range of materials—from pipe cleaners to 3D printers—to create a small collection of books. The group will meet Monday, August 20 through Thursday, August 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Applications to take part in Reading Buddies or the Build a Better Book mini-camp are due by June 1. Applications are not required for The Do Gooders Club, but teens should register through the library. Get more information on all three programs here.
