Original Illustrations from ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!’ Are Now on Display at the New-York Historical Society

You can now see original illustrations for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! The Magical Car on display at the New-York Historical Society, according to a press release.

Twenty-nine original watercolor illustrations by Barney Tobey and the book’s page proofs from the 1968 edition with text can be viewed at this limited-time exhibition. This is the only children’s book that Ian Fleming—notably known as the author of the James Bond series—wrote. Mr. and Mrs. David M. Tobey, Barney’s son, donated these works to the New-York Historical Society.

“Our visitors are in for a treat this summer as they follow along with the Pott family and their magical car on their fantastical adventure,” Dr. Louise Mirrer, president and CEO of the New-York Historical Society, said in a statement.

One hundred cartoons created by Tobey were donated along with the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! illustrations, and many of them were created for the New Yorker. Tobey lived at Central Park West his entire life and created cartoons that were published in the New Yorker, Collier’s Magazine, Saturday Evening Post, and Variety.

The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! works are now on display at the New-York Historical Society through Wednesday, Aug. 30. For more information, visit the New-York Historical Society’s website.
