Kellogg's Recalls Honey Smacks Cereal After Salmonella Outbreak

Kellogg's Recalls Honey Smacks Cereal After Salmonella Outbreak

This Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a warning about Kellogg's Honey Smacks after 100 people were infected with Salmonella. This outbreak, which resulted in 30 hospitalizations so far, is so serious that Kellogg's issued a recall and the CDC is advising consumers to throw away any and all boxes of Honey Smacks with an expiration date of June 14, 2018 to June 14 2019.

With confirmed cases in 33 states so far, and 11 cases in New York specifically, it’s best to play it safe.

Whether that box is opened or not, it’s recommended that you toss it out immediately or return it to the store for a refund. Even if you or someone in your family feels fine after having a bowl, it can take up to 72 hours to experience symptoms of Salmonella, so you should throw the cereal away and wash any containers that may have been used to store it.

If you are your loved ones experience diarrhea, fever, or abdominal cramps, seek medical treatment. Though Salmonella typically isn't life threatening, children ages 5 and younger are more likely to have severe illness as a result of infection.
