Customizable Dessert Shop Opens in Larchmont

Sugar Mama by Kim Bakeshop, a bakery that offers customizable cookies and cakes, is opening in Larchmont next month. The bakery offers baking birthday parties, classes, and a summer camp.

Sugar Mama by Kim Bakeshop is opening a brick-and-mortar bakery in Larchmont. Initially an Etsy shop for customizable cookies, owner Kim Conca decided that she needed to open a physical shop after she started turning orders away online because her treats became so popular. Sugar Mama by Kim Bakeshop is set to open in April and will sell decorative cookies, homestyle cookies, cakes, and cupcakes—all of which can be customized by calling to order in advance. While Conca decorates the cookies, Jaclyn Dinko will create all the custom cake designs.

A self-taught decorative cookie baker, Conca started baking at age 13 and would give trays of cookies to people she knew. She started experimenting with cookie decorating and learned techniques by watching YouTube videos and searching Google. Once she came up with a recipe that worked, Conca opened her Etsy shop in March 2013 and business took off from there.

“I said, ‘You know, these cookies need to taste as good as they look,’” she says. “When people write reviews and comments, when they say how good they taste… those are what I take to heart.”

As a mother of three girls, Conca knew she wanted to include a children’s aspect to the shop because she used to babysit kids and worked at a summer camp. The bakery will offer birthday parties, after-school baking classes, and a summer day camp.

During birthday parties, kids ages 5 and older can bake cookies from scratch and decorate them. The shop will provide cupcakes as part of the birthday packages. The summer camp will run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from July 6-August 8, 9am-12pm. At the camp, kids can learn to bake and decorate cookies, cupcakes, and cake pops. Registration is set to begin in April. Baking and decorating classes will start in September and more information will be available closer to that month.
